Earlier it was Madhuri Dixit, who was an inspiration and role model for Kangana for her role in Tanu Weds Manu and now she says it is Madhubala.
The director Aanand L Rai says that he had Madhubala in mind, before conceiving the character of Kangana for Tanu Weds Manu, which is about the journey of two individual, who are thrown in together by destiny. Kangana plays a rebellious girl, who has her own thoughts and rules for getting married. She plays a small town spirited girl, and says that she was inspired by Madhubala’s persona to develop her character.
Kangna told media, "Aanand was very clear about the tone he wanted to adopt for the movie. He told me that he wasn’t pitting me against the heroines of our times but instead had Madhubala in mind. Of course he didn’t mean that in terms of the look or setting, but in the spirit of the film and the character."
Kangna further adds, "My character in the film is not glamorous. She is audacious but very lovable character. She is from a very cultured Kanpur family, who has studied in Delhi University. But then she also likes to shock people and have a bit of fun."
About preparing for her role for the movie, Kangna says, "For quite a few roles that I have done in the past, there is a fair amount of research that I had to do. I had to apply my mind, figure out how that character would behave and in a given situation, how would she react. For Tanu I did not have to do that but I am sure many will identify with her. I come from the North, I have grown up with people who think like Tanu and also dress up like her. So it was not a role that needed too much research," she says.
Also starring R Madhavan, Deepak Dobriyal and Eijaz Khan, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ releases all over this Friday.
